  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from WriterReaderHeather -- Incredible story about an incredible icon! : Talk about persistence paying off! That’s Tu Youyou in a nutshell. Songju Ma Daemicke’s book tells the story of how Tu Youyou experimented and experimented and experimented until she finally found success! She persevered through gender barriers (most girls in 1930s China did not go to school), biases against traditional Chinese traditional medicine (the Cultural Revolution that began in the late 1960s did not support traditional Chinese or Western cultures), and hundreds of failed experiments, to finally discover a treatment for malaria. This book shares the true story of an important woman in history in a child-friendly way while conveying themes of perseverance, persistence, belief, and altruism. Lin’s bright and expressive illustrations compliment the text beautifully. Great read! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Teresa Robeson -- Inspirational! : There are a number of serious illnesses that have plagued human beings for a long time, malaria being one of those diseases. This picture book highlights the efforts of a Chinese woman doctor who spearheaded the team that created the most effective treatment: artemisinin-based combination therapy. Readers get an intimate look at how her childhood molded her determination and informed her knowledge. We also get to see how she scientifically and systematically pursued the discovery of a working medicine. The author makes a difficult concept easy to understand while the illustrations are rendered in an accessible, child-friendly way. You will be inspired by, and cheer for, Dr. Tu. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from S.R. Shamsi -- A True and Inspiring Story! : This inspiring story is written beautifully, with lovely illustrations. The story of Tu Youyou’s discovery of a cure for Malaria is a story that will inspire many children. Not only is this extremely timely, but it fills a great need to inspire children to reach for the seemingly impossible. We see Tu Youyou’s struggles and failures as she tries again and again to figure out the answers to the problem. A great story with a valuable lesson, that success comes after many failures. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from A. Bissonette -- An incredible woman! : I am a pushover for well written picture book biographies about little known (at least to me) women who achieved great things and helped their communities. Tu Youyou’s Discovery is exactly that. Young readers will learn not only about an incredible scientist but about the scientific method, traditional medicine, and how being stubborn sometimes can be a good thing! Highly recommended.
